When someone has unhealed trauma they will teach you to control your emotions.⁣

When people aren’t comfortable with expressing their own emotions they will not be able to tolerate yours. This is everything to do with them and nothing to do with you.⁣

I remember when I was heavily pregnant with my second daughter and my grandad died. This was the first family member I’ve ever lost and I was told by someone to not cry at the funeral and make it about me. During the time of being connected to this person I was often told to stop crying and I eventually got to a place after 7 years where I felt emotionally void because I learnt to squash all my real feelings which then just became trapped emotions in the body and ultimately made me feel unwell.⁣

It’s only at the start of the year I realised how toxic this dynamic was and I started a healing journey of ‘feeling my feelings’ again. I had to go back and remember who I was before this person came into my life and I also had to recognise the patterns.⁣

I knew this person had an incredibly upsetting childhood which contributed to themselves being tuned out of their feelings. But what took place was they had transferred all there childhood hurts onto me and gave me limiting beliefs such as “it’s weak to cry” and they would walk out of a room and dismiss, ignore, reject me should I need any source of emotional comfort.⁣

If anyone tells you that you cannot feeling a feeling you need to recognise that this comes from their own trauma and it’s not true. No one should ever tell you to control your feelings and if you find yourself in a place where you start to control them you need to do the inner work and heal. Eventually you will attract like minded people into your life who are comfortable expressing their feelings and are able to hold safe space for yours.⁣

Parents also, never tell your child to control their feelings. Developmentally they can’t and they need to learn self regulation from you. They need to see that it’s ok to cry, it’s ok to be sad, it’s ok to feel.⁣
